Ichishkíin Legends and Narratives
These materials were transliterated and digitized at the University of Oregon (UO) under National Science Foundation Grant No. BCS-0936684, titled Sahaptian and the Evolution of Hierarchical Systems, Spike Gildea PI, and National Science Foundation Grant No. BCS-1064459, titled Ichishkíin/Sahaptin (yak): Language documentation of Natural and Cultural Resources, Janne Underriner PI, Philip Rigdon (Yakama Nation) co-PI. We digitized and annotated a corpus of previously-published and/or collected texts in Ichishkíin (Sahaptin). Other University of Oregon faculty involved in the project are Virginia Beavert and Joana Jansen. Student workers who worked on these texts included Regan Anderson, Aubrey Jacobus, AJ Kazarian and Justin Walker. The work was housed and supported by UO’s Northwest Indian Language Institute (NILI). Goals of the projects included supporting efforts to teach and learn the Ichishkiin language, and to strengthen natural and cultural resource management. The texts in these packets are from Melville Jacobs’s Northwest Sahaptin Texts (1934, 1937). The elders who worked with Jacobs are: Joe Hunt, Sam N. Eyley, Jr., Sam Eyler Sr., Mary Eyley, Jim Yoke, Mrs. Dan Secena, and Lewy Costima.
